A’s drop 11 in second round of roster cuts

Eleven players, including top prospect Richie Martin, were reassigned to the Oakland Athletics‘ minor league camp, the team announced Sunday.

Narrowing their spring roster to 52, including 12 additional non-roster invitees, the A’s took a second step toward trimming to the Opening Day 25.

Standing out among those reassigned, along with Martin — the franchise’s No. 9 prospect according to Baseball America — are veteran lefty Felix Doubront and utility man Max Muncy.

Martin, a first-round selection (No. 20 overall) of the A’s in the 2015 draft, had gotten into four games this spring, going 0-for-4 with a strikeout. The shortstop spent much of last season with High-A Stockton slashing .230/.322/.312. He did get a five-game cup of coffee with Double-A Midland where he was significantly more successful, slashing .333/.444/.533.

Doubront suffered a lost season in 2016, after tearing his ulnar collateral ligament in what was supposed to be second-to-last spring start.

Muncy spent 51 games with the major league club in 2016, slashing .186/.308/.257. He has enjoyed moderate success in his minor league career, slashing .268/.375/.425 over five seasons including stops at every level. The 26 year-old had gone 1-for-4 with a walk and strikeout this spring.

Reliever Tyler Sturdevant, infielders Jermaine Curtis, Rangel Ravelo and Josh Rodriguez and outfielders Andrew Lambo and Kenny Wilson round out the list of players shipped out prior to Sunday’s 9-8 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Following the game, the A’s announced infielder Renato Nunez and pitcher Zach Neal were sent to the minor league camps, which are scheduled to begin games on Wednesday, March 16, according to the team.

The remaining roster includes 24 pitchers, six catchers, 13 infielders and nine outfielders.
