App on stolen phone leads CHP to hit-and-run suspect

California Highway Patrol officers used an application on a stolen iPhone to help them arrest a suspect in a hit-and-run collision on Friday afternoon in Emeryville.

At about 1 p.m., two vehicles were allegedly involved in a collision on westbound Interstate Highway 80 near Powell Street, CHP officials said.

The drivers of both cars allegedly got out of their vehicles but one of the drivers allegedly refused to give the other his personal information, according to CHP officials.

Instead, he allegedly started to get in his car.

The passenger in the other car snapped some photos of the suspect’s car, but the suspect took the phone and drove away.

The victim of the theft called 911 with another phone.

Officers learned when they arrived that the stolen iPhone had an app that allowed officers to track the location of it, CHP officials said.

Officers put out a Be-On-The-Lookout alert for the suspect and his vehicle.

Oakland police found the suspect and the vehicle in East Oakland.

CHP officers arrived and arrested 20-year-old Jeremiah Jones of Antioch, according to CHP officials.

Jones was allegedly carrying a stolen gun and he was arrested on suspicion of robbery, possessing a stolen gun, carrying a concealed weapon and hit-and-run.
