A pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle on eastbound Interstate Highway 80 in Berkeley Friday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported just before 8 p.m. on Highway 80 near Gilman Street.
Arriving officers found an unresponsive man at that location as well as a blue Hyundai. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver is cooperating with the investigation and they do not think the driver was impaired by drugs or alcohol, according to the CHP.
A Sig-alert was issued at 8:08 p.m., and as of 8:25 p.m. two lanes remained blocked at the scene of the crash. All lanes of the roadway were open by 9 p.m., however.
Investigators are still trying to determine why the victim was on the highway. Anyone with additional information is asked to call the Oakland CHP at (510) 450-3821 or (707) 551-4100.
