Sheriff’s office identifies construction worker fatally hit by truck

A construction worker fatally hit by a truck in the Santa Cruz Mountains on Thursday afternoon has been identified by the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office as 54-year-old Robert Gill of Los Gatos.

Gill, who worked for Watsonville-based Graniterock, was working to clear a mudslide between Vine Hill and Sugarloaf roads on state Highway 17 when around noon, a truck owned by Hildebrand and Sons Trucking hit him and another worker, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The other man was transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. CHP Officer Trista Drake did not have his updated condition as of this morning.

The highway was closed Friday morning because a hill in the area is untenable.
