Police identify 18-year-old man shot dead

An 18-year-old high school student who died after an early morning shooting in Oakland early Saturday has been identified as Joaquin Byrd, according to police.

Officers found Byrd suffering from gunshot wounds at 1:19 a.m. in the 4200 block of MacArthur Boulevard, police said.

Officers attempted to treat Byrd at the scene until medical crews arrived. He was then taken to a hospital, where he died a short while later, according to police.

No arrest has been made in the shooting as of Tuesday morning and a suspect description was not immediately available.

Byrd was a student at Skyline High School in Oakland and was set to graduate in June.

The school said Monday in a statement:

“Our hearts go out to his family…This tragic event underscores how much work we have to do in order to improve respect for human life and protect children of this city.

Joaquin’s death also reinforces the idea that improving safety in our neighborhoods is a city-wide issue in which we all play a part.”

The school said it was providing grief counselors to students and staff to help them cope with Byrd’s death.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for Byrd by a family member. As of Tuesday morning, the page at https://www.gofundme.com/joaquin-aka-byrd-funeral had raised $3,370.

Anyone with information about the fatal shooting is asked to contact the Police Department’s Homicide Section at (510) 238-3821 or the police tip line at (510) 238-7950.
