CHP finds auto parts at hit-and-run scene

California Highway Patrol officers found parts of a vehicle that may have been involved in a fatal pedestrian hit-and-run collision on U.S. Highway 101 early Thursday morning in Novato.

Based on witness statements, investigators believe the collision that killed a male pedestrian occurred between 12:30 a.m. and 1 a.m., CHP Officer Andrew Barclay said.

A big-rig driver stopped when he saw the man’s body in the road between the Atherton Avenue on-ramp and the slow lanes of southbound Highway 101, Barclay said.

Emergency responders said it appears the man found on the bottom of the on-ramp was struck by a vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No vehicles that may have been involved in the collision were found at the scene, Barclay said.

The on-ramp and slow lane of Highway 101 were closed until 4:30 a.m. The auto parts found at the scene have not been matched to a particular make or model vehicle, Barclay said.

CHP officers are talking with witnesses who either stopped at the scene or called the CHP dispatch center, Barclay said.
