A 14-year-old student at Piedmont High School was arrested on Wednesday afternoon after he was found with a BB gun in his backpack, according to police.
Police responded to the school, located at 800 Magnolia Ave., at 3:13 p.m. on reports that a student was brandishing a firearm. They isolated the student and found a gun in his backpack, police Chief Jeremy Bowers said.
The officers determined the gun, despite looking realistic, was just a BB gun, Bowers said. The student was arrested and investigators are still trying to determine what his intent was and to what extent he brandished the weapon.
The student has not been identified because of his age.
School district Superintendent Randall Booker sent a letter to parents of high school students on Tuesday informing them of the incident.
Booker said:
“Student and staff safety is paramount and I appreciate the collaborative effort between the school administration and the Piedmont Police Department in keeping our campuses safe.”
Bowers also said that he appreciated the proactive report.
Bowers said:
“At the end of the day it’s the message of if you see something say something.”
