49ers interview Tom Cable, McDaniels bows out

The 49ers continued a wave of interviews to find their new head coach, assessing Seahawks offensive line and assistant head coach Tom Cable on Sunday before holding meetings with Seahawks co-directors of player personnel Scott Fitterer and Trent Kirchner on Monday.

Cable does double duty and he’s often faced with a heavy workload, though fans may revolt if Jed York hires Cable for head coach. Cable initally joined the Raiders as an offensive line coach under first-year head coach Lane Kiffin, who was fired after beginning the 2008 season with a 1-3 record.

Following Kiffin’s firing, Cable was named Raiders interim head coach. The Raiders went 4-8 under Cable, but showed enough improvement that he was made permanent for 2009. His tenure would last two seasons before Raiders owner Al Davis informed Cable in 2011 that his contract would not be renewed after an 8-8 2001 campaign.

The 49ers have burned through three head coaches in the past three years, and they seem to not be in a hurry to make a coaching decision. Their choices appear to have narrowed to three: Cable, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.

McDaniels reportedly removed himself from the running on Monday, and if Shanahan is the 49ers’ man, they will likely have to wait Atlanta is out of the playoffs to move forward.

Cable, though, could find ways to sway the team’s thinking. His offensive lines became an essential part of the Seahawks’ offense during the Marshawn Lynch era, with Seattle battering other teams behind their power running attack.

Cable was the sixth candidate to interview for the 49ers coaching job.
