Stephen Curry assists Oakland kids for charity

Warriors star point guard Stephen Curry handed out boxes of food and personal care items to Oakland community members Tuesday as part of a charity campaign for the holiday season.

Curry himself along with members of his family handed out the boxes of goods along with kids’ books and teddy bears to eager fans lined up outside Beebe Memorial Cathedral at 3900 Telegraph Ave. in North Oakland.

The boxes were among 1,200 Curry is helping to distribute from international nonprofit Feed the Children. It’s the fourth year that Curry has been working with Feed the Children to distribute food and other necessities in Oakland. Curry has tripled his involvement over that time.

The boxes Curry handed out included 25 pounds of food and 10 pounds of basic essentials like shampoo, conditioner, lotion and personal care items. Curry’s wife Aisha and daughters Riley and Ryan also helped out handing out Star Wars books and teddy bears.

It’s part of the Warriors larger holiday push for charities, dubbed the “Season of Giving.” The Warriors have been holding charity events throughout November and December as part of the effort.

Curry said it’s the “collective mantra” of the Warriors to help out using some of the opportunities and resources that they’ve been given. He and his teammates want to “impact lives and make lives better,” he said.

Curry greeted a cheering crowd of hundreds gathered in the cathedral before going outside to hand out the boxes.

Curry said:

“This is home for our family. … so I definitely appreciate the love and we want to give it right back.”

Beebe’s pastor, the Rev. Charles Hames Jr., called Curry a “genius” at basketball but said he is “as great a man off the court as he is on the court.”
