Trapped longshoreman rescued at Port of Oakland

Fire officials said an injured and trapped longshoreman was rescued this afternoon from a container ship at the Port of Oakland.

Firefighters were told at 1:53 p.m. that a longshoreman was trapped between two containers at Berth 57 at 1999 Middle Harbor Road, Battalion Chief Geoff Hunter said.

It looks like some containers shifted, which injured the person’s leg and trapped them, Hunter said The biggest trouble was getting the person off the boat because of a narrow platform from the boat to the dock, the chief said.

So firefighters used a small container on a crane to lift the longshoreman off the boat. The longshoreman was taken to Highland Hospital with injuries that needed attention in the hospital’s trauma center, Hunter said.
