Oakland Unified School District names interim superintendent

The Oakland Unified School District’s Board of Education announced Wednesday evening that Devin Dillon has been named as the district’s new interim superintendent.

Dillon, who was a deputy superintendent with the district, was named during the board’s meeting in City Council chambers at City Hall.

She will replace Antwan Wilson, who announced last month that he was leaving the district to become the next chancellor for District of Columbia Public Schools in Washington, D.C.

Dillon was serving as deputy superintendent of Academic Social Emotional Learning before being named interim superintendent.

She has previously also worked as director of elementary schools for the Los Angeles Unified School District and served in Denver Public Schools in a variety of positions for 15 years, district officials said.

Ash Solar, executive director of GO Public Schools Oakland, an advocacy group for the city’s public schools, issued a statement about Dillon’s appointment, calling it a “critical step towards ensuring continuity and a focus on finishing the school year strong.”

The group plans to hold a series of events in the new year to get public input on a search for a permanent superintendent.
