Santiago Avalos Sanchez, 28, was one of two victims in a shooting reported at North Rodeo Gulch Road and Soquel Drive around 2:30 p.m., Santa Cruz County sheriff’s officials said.
Sanchez was transported to a hospital where he died of his injuries. He leaves behind a wife and two children, according to the Soquel Elementary Home and School Club that has started a GoFundMe page to support his surviving family members.
The online page has raised $3,155 of its $5,000 goal as of this morning. Donations can be made online at https://www.gofundme.com/avaloscamacho-family-fund.
A 32-year-old Watsonville woman also injured in the shooting was sent to a hospital in stable condition, according to the sheriff’s office.
Jose Luis Ramos, 31, of Watsonville, was identified as a suspect in the shooting and was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail, where he’s being held in lieu of $2 million bail. He was scheduled for arraignment today in Santa Cruz County Superior Court.
Investigators determined that Ramos knew the female victim, sheriff’s officials said.
After the shooting, detectives found Ramos and his car in the 300 block of Porter Street and arrested him. He allegedly had methamphetamine and a methamphetamine pipe with him during his arrest, sheriff’s officials said.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the sheriff’s office at (831) 471-1151.
