Phone scammer seeking charity disguised as police

Police are warning residents in Pleasanton to beware of phone calls from a person fraudulently claiming to be from the Pleasanton Police Department, police said Wednesday.

Police have received recent reports of residents receiving calls from someone asking for donations on behalf of the police department, according to police.

The caller often says they are a retired police officer.

According to police, the Pleasanton Police Department does not accept monetary donations.

The Pleasanton Police Officer’s Association, a nonprofit organization, does however accept monetary donations, which are always solicited by mail and never by phone, police said.
