Public input sought on Richmond Bridge shoulder lane

Bay Area Transportation agencies are holding an open house in San Rafael Friday evening about converting the right shoulder of eastbound Interstate 580 on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge to a third traffic lane.

The extra traffic lane would be between the Sir Francis Drake Boulevard on-ramp in Marin County to the Richmond Parkway/Point Richmond exit in Contra Costa County.

The third eastbound lane is scheduled to open in the fall of 2017.

Lane and ramp closures during the construction of the third lane will take place mostly at night and in the early morning hours, but some closures may extend to 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The project also includes replacing pavement on the bridge approaches to accommodate heavier traffic and relocating a retaining wall in Richmond to provide safe sight distances to vehicles traveling in the new right lane.

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission, Caltrans, Transportation Authority of Marin, and Contra Costa Transportation Authority are holding the hearing from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at San Rafael City Hall, 1400 Fifth Ave.

The public will be able to review the project plans, talk with project team members and provide input on the project.
