Police say pair shot on freeway were targeted

Two people who were shot while driving on Interstate Highway 580 in Oakland on Wednesday afternoon were deliberately targeted, police said Thursday.

The two Oakland residents, a 26-year-old man and 29-year-old woman, were headed eastbound on Interstate Highway 580 when they were fired on at about 3:15 p.m., according to police.

They got off the highway at the Fruitvale Avenue off-ramp and were taken to a hospital in stable condition.
Investigators closed down all eastbound lanes of the highway for the next two hours looking for evidence, snarling the evening commute.

Police have not made any arrests in the case and have not said why the two people might have been targeted in the shooting.

Anyone with information about the shooting has been asked to contact Oakland police at (510) 238-3426.
