Mountain lion spotted near reservoir

Police are increasing patrols in a Lafayette neighborhood where a mountain lion was spotted, officers said Wednesday.

The cougar was seen in the 3300 block of Woodside Court, near the Lafayette Reservoir Recreation Area.

Police recommended that neighbors check on their pets. Residents who see a mountain lion should stay calm and slowly walk backward, standing up tall.

Mountain lions avoid contact with people, but anyone who comes across one should never crouch down, run away or approach the animal.

Anyone who sees a mountain lion in Lafayette can report the sighting to police dispatchers at 911 or (925) 284-5010.
