Two kayakers rescued near Rodeo Beach

A Coast Guard crew rescued two kayakers from the water near Rodeo Beach on Sunday afternoon, Coast Guard officials said.

Rodeo Beach is two miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge, in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

A motorist parked at nearby Point Bonita contacted Coast Guard watch-standers at around 3:15 p.m. to report seeing the pair caught in a current and being pulled out to sea.

A crew on a 47-foot motor lifeboat rescued the two and their kayak without injury at about 4 p.m.

“The Coast Guard urges anyone that sees mariners in danger to contact the Coast Guard or 911 immediately,” Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Walter Daniel said in a statement.

“In this case, the motorist’s quick action helped us retrieve the two kayakers out of the water,” Daniel said.

The National Weather Service issued a beach hazards statement over the weekend, cautioning Bay Area boaters and beachgoers of strong winds and large waves. The statement will remain in effect through late Tuesday night.
