Four inmates tied clothes and bed sheets together Wednesday night to escape the Santa Clara County main jail in San Jose and two are at-large Friday morning, sheriff’s officials said.
Rogelio Chavez, Lanon Campbell and two other inmates escaped from a second floor window in the oldest section of the jail by cutting through the window bars.
Deputies became aware of the escape at 11:08 p.m.
Two inmates were immediately stopped just outside the jail, but Chavez and Campbell are at-large, according to the sheriff’s office.
Following the escape, deputies set up a perimeter in an attempt to locate Chavez and Campbell.
Sheriff’s deputies, San Jose police and officers with the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety are involved in the search.
Chavez was booked into the jail on Aug. 17 on various charges including burglary, extortion, false imprisonment, resisting arrest and firearms violations, deputies said. He is described as Hispanic, 6 feet 1 inch tall, 190 pounds with a distinctive facial tattoo above and below his left eye.
Campbell was booked into the jail on Feb. 12, 2015 on charges including robbery, false imprisonment, criminal threats and firearms violations, deputies said. He is described as black, 6 feet 4 inches tall and 220 pounds.
Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Rich Glennon said deputies don’t know whether Chavez and Campbell are armed but they are considered dangerous.
Additional law enforcement officers will be at the Turkey Trot road race this morning in San Jose to protect runners at the already heavy-security event, Glennon said.
Anyone who sees either Chavez or Campbell should use extreme caution and call 911.
