A couple killed early Sunday morning when their car crashed under a railroad overpass in Salinas have been identified as 20-year-old Osvaldo Garcia and 24-year-old Daniella Perez, police said Monday.
Garcia was speeding in a 2016 Nissan 370Z on eastbound East Alisal Street past Front Street around 3 a.m. when the vehicle began to fishtail, police said.
The vehicle then hit the center median and slid south before the driver’s side door crashed into a pillar underneath a train bridge, according to police.
Salinas residents Garcia and Perez, a front seat passenger, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
The crash marked the city’s ninth and 10th traffic deaths this year. Alcohol didn’t appear to play a role in the crash, police said.
A fundraiser has been set up through the website GoFundMe for Garcia’s family at https://www.gofundme.com/osvaldo-garcia.
Garcia was leaving work with Perez, his girlfriend, before the crash, his sister Leticia Garcia wrote on the fundraising page.
“I loved my little brother and his girlfriend was the sweetest angel,” Leticia Garcia said.
The fund has raised $1,100 of its $10,000 goal as of this morning.
