Oakland firefighters are patrolling the downtown area this Tuesday after protesters set several fires on streets, a battalion chief said.
The fires were set between 10th and 27th streets on Telegraph Avenue and Broadway. Four engine companies responded to extinguish the fires.
The protest broke out in response to Tuesday’s election of Donald Trump as U.S. president.
At least 50 protesters marched from downtown to state Highway 24, where a protester was hit by a car near the Claremont Avenue off-ramp. The victim is being treated for serious injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The 12th Street Oakland City Center BART station closed because of the protest, BART officials reported at 12:18 a.m.
Police officers are on the scene in riot gear, including helmets, gas masks and long batons.
