Teen killed in San Jose park identified

A boy shot at a San Jose park and pronounced dead at a hospital Wednesday night has been identified as 17-year-old Umberto Salas, police said Monday.

Officers were sent to Regional Medical Center of San Jose on a report of a person shot around 8:40 p.m., police said.

Responding officers were told the victim, later identified as Salas, a San Jose resident, died of his injuries, according to police.

Further investigation showed the teenage boy was shot at Dove Hill Park located near Ravens Place Way and Muir Place Court, just east of U.S Highway 101, police said.

The boy had been sitting in a car with a man when the two suspects approached the pair and tried to rob them, according to police.

The man was assaulted and left with injuries not considered life-threatening, police said.

Salas was shot and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to police.

The suspects, only described as males, haven’t been identified or arrested in connection with the shooting and assault, police said.

Salas’ death marks the city’s 39th homicide this year, according to police.
