Filmmaker Kevin Epps arrested after Glen Park homicide

San Francisco police have identified a suspect arrested in connection with a homicide in a Glen Park neighborhood Monday afternoon as 48-year-old documentary filmmaker Kevin Epps.

Police responded to a report of a shooting in a home in the 100 block of Addison Street around 1:30 p.m. Monday.

Officers found a man in his 40s there with an apparent gunshot wound. Paramedics responded, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

KPIX-TV reported the victim’s identity as Marcus Polk Sr., according to the man’s son and Epps’ stepson, Marcus Polk Jr. The younger Polk told the station Epps shot Polk Sr. in the back after a confrontation between the two men:

“He [Polk Sr.] showed up out of the blue today and from what I’ve been told, he made a comment that ‘she doesn’t really like you. … And he shot him in the back.”

Around 9:20 p.m. police issued a statement indicating that Epps had been arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of homicide and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Epps gained notoriety for his 2003 documentary “Straight Outta Hunters Point,” a stark portrayal of street life and systemic social issues in San Francisco’s Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood. Epps followed his debut with documentaries “Rap Dreams” in 2006, “The Black Rock AKA Black Alcatraz” in 2009, and his “Straight Outta Hunters Point 2” debuted at the San Francisco Black Film Festival in 2011.
