A woman died Thursday afternoon when her 2005 Kia crashed off westbound Napa Road west of state Route 121 and east of Sonoma in Sonoma County, a California Highway Patrol officer said.
The driver allowed the Kia to drift off the road where it struck a drainage ditch at a driveway and became airborne, CHP Officer Marc Renspurger said.
The Kia landed on its wheels and the right side of the vehicle caught fire, Renspurger said.
Witnesses and other motorists tried to put out the fire and remove the driver but the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames, Renspurger said.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident was reported just before 1 p.m. The crash closed Napa Road until 4:08 p.m., the CHP said.
