A man was tackled by bystanders and arrested as he attacked another man with a hatchet at a park in San Francisco’s Western Addition on Monday afternoon, police said Tuesday.
The victim, a 39-year-old man, was sitting in Jefferson Square, a park at Turk and Gough streets, around 4 p.m. when a 23-year-old man approached him and hit him with the handle of a hatchet, police said.
The victim ran away with the suspect in pursuit and still swinging the hatchet handle.
The victim fell to the ground. The suspect stopped and raised the blade end of the hatchet over his head preparing to strike when he was tackled by good Samaritans, police said.
The victim was taken to the hospital with injuries to his back, knees and hands, but was expected to survive.
The suspect was arrested. His identity was not immediately released.
