Armed, suicidal suspect surrenders in Civic Center

An armed suicidal suspect surrendered peacefully to police Saturday evening after an hours-long standoff in San Francisco’s Civic Center Plaza, police said.

Police spokesman Officer Carlos Manfredi said on Twitter at 6:06 p.m. that the suspect had surrendered.

The standoff was reported at about 12:25 p.m. on Twitter by San Francisco fire officials. Police and fire officials initially evacuated the plaza and asked people to avoid the area.

Police had asked news crews to avoid flying helicopters in the area, as the noise contributed to a hostile situation.
