The City of San Francisco is commemorating the 15th anniversary of September 11 by flying flags at half-staff, according to officials from the office of the mayor.
In addition, City Hall and Coit Tower will also be lit up red, white and blue, city officials said.
San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee said in a statement:
“Fifteen years ago, first responders around the nation responded to the call for help. They did not fear for their own safety – they charged towards danger with the bravery and selflessness that defines every man and woman who swears to protect the public. Today, we honor our first responders as we remember the nearly 3,000 lives we lost in the attacks of September 11, 2001.”
He continued:
“The world has changed since that morning 15 years ago, but keeping our City safe remains my highest priority. Working together with City agencies, law enforcement and community, our City is stronger, more prepared and more resilient than ever.”
One of the hijacked planes, United Airlines Flight 93, was a San Francisco International Airport-bound flight. Several of the victims were Bay Area natives.
