What a comeback.
The Raiders, Derek Carr and the rest of the team, ran one of the most improbable, incredible, and totally dominant comebacks in a team history loaded with them.
When Carr launched his back shoulder fade to the left corner of the endzone, with receiver Michael Crabtree jammed against the Saints’ rookie cornerback, the prospects of the Raiders winning were dim.
But Crabtree, who has arguably the best mitts in football, came down with it. For the win.
The Raiders’ 22 4th quarter points are almost certain to be a season record across the league. It rivals the Monday Night Miracle, when the Jets scored 30 points during the final frame to beat the Miami Dolphins in 2000.
Helping fuel the impossible was an undrafted rookie running back who had the best training camp of the position group despite being derailed by injury through most of the preseason games.
Along with Richard’s 75 yard scamper through the jam-packed left side of the Raiders’ offensive line for six points was Seth Roberts‘ catch at the middle of the five yard line.
Dead center of the hashes, and just short of the goal line, Roberts managed to spin off a few Saints linebackers, and somehow, find the end zone.
Roberts is no stranger to fourth quarter heroics as the Raiders trail, and Carr chose the number 4 because of his admiration for the incredulous drives that were led by Brett Favre when he was a tike tossing pigskin in his Bakersfield backyard.
And now, Carr can claim the greatest fourth quarter performance in Raiders’ history, and one of the most outrageous since football was first televised.
