San Franciscans react to Colin Kaepernick protest

By

San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick attracted attention to the otherwise largely meaningless NFL preseason by sitting or taking a knee for the traditional pregame playing of the national anthem.

The team and league pronounced support for Kaepernick’s free speech rights to express himself, while many fans reacted by exercising their own first amendment rights — on social media and beyond — to support, showcase, decry, or assail Kaepernick’s polarizing opinion.

Photojournalist David Andrews asked citizens what they thought of Kaepernick’s protest, and captured for SFBay a spectrum of answers from San Franciscans on the outspoken signal-caller.
