Teen bicyclist dies after Oakley crash

A 14-year-old bicyclist who died Monday morning at a hospital after he was involved in a collision Sunday night in Oakley has been identified as Kaleb Vancil, according to the Alameda County coroner’s bureau.

Around 8:15 p.m., a vehicle struck Vancil as he was riding near Big Break Road and Vintage Parkway, city officials said.

Vancil, an Oakley resident, was riding on the sidewalk but allegedly left it to avoid pedestrian traffic and a driver struck him, according to city officials.

The injured boy was airlifted to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, where he died the next morning.

The driver cooperated with the investigation and investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision, city officials said.
