Crash pushes car into path of moving train

A vehicle was struck by an Amtrak Capitol Corridor train in Union City Wednesday evening after being pushed onto the tracks by a minor traffic collision, but no injuries were reported, according to police.

The strike was reported around 6:35 p.m. at Whipple Road and Railroad Avenue.

Investigating officers determined that a woman driving a Toyota Prius was lightly rear-ended, pushing her vehicle onto the tracks. She noticed the train was coming and safely exited the vehicle in time, according to police.

The Prius was totaled when it was struck by the train, which was carrying roughly 200 passengers, police said.

Neither driver was injured in the initial crash, and no injuries were reported among the people on the train.

Drugs and alcohol are not suspected as factors.

Passengers on the train, No. 546, were delayed roughly 90 minutes as a result of the crash.
