Brand-new San Jose State dorms delayed

Hundreds of San Jose State University freshmen who were supposed to move in to the college’s new residence hall this weekend have been told the building isn’t ready for them and have been placed in temporary living spaces, according to school officials.

There are 820 first-year students assigned to live in the university’s Campus Village 2 tower, but the building isn’t ready to house students, according to an online message today on the school’s website from the Office of the President.

A portion of the tower is estimated to open to the students within two weeks and the remainder of the building in four weeks, according to a letter Thursday addressed to residents by Sonja Daniels, the university’s associate vice president for campus life.

The 820 students have been accommodated at other residential spaces on campus including Hoover, Royce and Washburn halls in rooms for up to three people in addition to other places on campus as they become available, Daniels said.

Once the new building is opened, professional movers will help students bring their belongings into their dorms, according to Daniels.

The first-year students will also be provided a SJSU sweatshirt and $150 in credit through the school’s Gold Points system that can be spent at the school’s dining halls and bookstore, according to Daniels.
