Muni art finalists narrowed to top 10

Ten finalists have been chosen to compete to have their art displayed across a San Francisco Municipal Railway bus next year, Muni officials announced Friday.

The chosen ten will compete for the top five slots of the Muni Art program, however, only one will be chosen to have their art splashed across dozens of Muni buses, Muni officials said.

In a statement, Muni Director of Transportation Ed Reiskin said officials are extremely pleased that the Muni Art program has been so well-received:

“These moving galleries will bring additional beauty to the public transit system, while supporting local artists.”

Now in it’s second year, the program has doubled the number of buses on which the art will be displayed from 50 to 100 buses, according to Muni officials.

The public is encouraged to view and vote for their favorite the artists’ work by ends Aug. 29 at 6 p.m., Muni officials said.

The artist who receives the most votes from the public will not only have their art displayed on the buses starting in Jan. 2017, but will also win $2,000, while the remaining four finalists will be awarded $1,250.

The contestants had been asked in May and June to submit applications that reflected their artistic concept of San Francisco Neighborhoods.

Of the 60 people who applied, the final ten were chosen by a jury made up of seven members of the San Francisco art community, according to Muni officials.
