Power restored after underground PG&E fire

Equipment in an underground power vault caught fire in downtown San Francisco early Tuesday morning, causing more than 300 PG&E customers to lose power, a utility spokesman said.

PG&E crews responded around midnight to an underground equipment issue that led to a small fire and smoke coming from two manholes in the area of Geary and Hyde streets, PG&E spokesman J.D. Guidi said.

San Francisco fire crews also responded but the flames had gone out on their own by the time they arrived, Guidi said. No one was injured in the fire.

Guidi said 351 customers were without power as a result of the incident but all of them had their power restored by 4:45 a.m.

The cause of the equipment failure is under investigation.
