Lands End cliff plunge kills Merced man

A man who died Saturday after falling from a cliff at Lands End in San Francisco has been identified as Vincent Holland, a 28-year-old Merced resident, according to the Marin County coroner’s office.

San Francisco fire officials said they first received reports of two people in distress just after 4:30 p.m. near Point Lobos.

Holland had fallen 50 to 100 feet from a cliff into the water and had to be retrieved by rescue swimmers. Firefighters also rescued a woman from the cliff’s edge, San Francisco fire spokesman Jonathan Baxter said.

The surf was so rough that Holland was taken by the U.S. Coast Guard to Fort Baker in Marin County, where paramedics pronounced him dead around 5:20 p.m.

The woman was suffering from cold and emotional distress, but refused medical care, Baxter said.

The incident is under investigation by U.S. Park Police. The coroner will conduct an autopsy and any required toxicology testing early next week, according to Chief Deputy Coroner Darrell Harris.
