Altamont fire expected to burn for days

Alameda County firefighters say a new fire at the Altamont Landfill is producing a large amount of smoke and could keep burning for a couple days, a battalion chief said.

The fire was reported at the Altamont Landfill between Livermore and Tracy at 7:36 p.m.

A large pile of landscaping materials roughly 100 feet by 500 feet, and roughly 20 feet deep in some places is burning, producing a large amount of smoke that can be seen from a distance, according to Battalion Chief Stephanie Radecke.

They’re concerned about putting firefighters on the pile of landscaping materials due to safety issues, and are using bulldozers and aircraft to fight the fire. Cal Fire is also at the scene.

Another fire was reported at the Altamont Landfill around 12:55 p.m. Wednesday. Radecke said this incident is taking place at the same location, but had a different origin.
