GGP hit-and-run suspect charged with murder

A San Francisco man has been charged with murder and other felonies in connection with a hit-and-run collision that killed a bicyclist in Golden Gate Park last month, District Attorney George Gascón announced today.

Nicky Garcia, 19, was arrested Friday in connection with the June 22 death of Heather Miller, a 41-year-old San Francisco resident.

UPDATE 2:53 p.m. Bail set at $10 million in fatal Golden Gate Park hit-and-run.

Miller was riding her bicycle near John F. Kennedy Drive and 30th Avenue around 6 p.m. that day when she was struck by a stolen white Honda Fit. The driver was allegedly speeding in the opposite lane of traffic while trying to pass another vehicle when he hit Miller head-on, according to police.

The car was found a short time later abandoned near the Golden Gate Angling & Casting Club in the park.

Miller was one of two bicyclists struck and killed by drivers within hours of each other on June 22.

Katherine Slattery, 26, was riding at Seventh and Howard streets at 8:24 p.m. that day when she was struck by a BMW X3 allegedly speeding through a red light, according to police.

Police arrested Farrukh Mushtaq, 32, at Ninth and Howard streets, a short distance from the crash, on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter.

Garcia has been charged with murder, vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run and auto burglary, according to prosecutors.

He is scheduled to appear this afternoon at the Hall of Justice for arraignment.
