How last season ended for the Golden State Warriors and their fans was humbling. The good news? Next season is just around the corner.
And the NBA Summer League acts as a de facto start to upcoming campaign.
The Warriors announced their full roster for the Las Vegas Summer League Friday, with their first game scheduled for Saturday, July 9 against the San Antonio Spurs.
For the second year in a row, a rising coaching candidate will lead the Oakland squad in Sin City. Assistant coach Jarron Collins follows in the footsteps of Luke Walton last year, and like Walton, Collins could very well be a hot name on the coaching market after next season.
The Warriors squad he will lead is made up of mostly rookies, headlined by 2016 draftees Damian Jones and Patrick McCaw. Jones will not play due to a torn right pectoral muscle, but he should be ready for training camp. Whereas the UNLV product, McCaw will be back on his college home court hoping to show why the Warriors signed the second round pick to a two-year guaranteed contract.
Some vets are sprinkled into the mix of rookies, with notable names like Landry Fields and Xavier Henry, and another name that will be very familiar to Warriors fans is Ognjen Kuzmic.
One name noticeably absent however is 2015 first round pick Kevon Looney. The big man will not participate in Las Vegas after undergoing another hip surgery, this time on his left hip in April, and will be out four to six months. Looney missed almost all of his rookie year after getting surgery on his right hip before last season.
Golden State will get a glimpse of the top of the 2016 draft as they play the Lakers and the second overall pick Brandon Ingram July 11, and then first overall pick Ben Simmons and the Sixers the next day before Summer League switches to a seeded tournament.
