Union Square jewelry theft suspects nabbed

Police arrested two men in connection with a heist at a Union Square jewelry store last week, in which the alleged burglars took over half a million dollars worth of jewelry, police said today.

The suspected burglars, whose images were captured by surveillance video, have been identified as San Francisco residents Andreaus Garrett, 24, and Carlnell Pitts, 27, according to police.

On June 23, around 3:45 a.m., Garrett and Carlnell allegedly entered a Union Square parking garage in a Ford sedan.

One of the two then gained access to a jewelry store in the 100 block of O’Farrell Street and loaded cases of jewelry into a duffel bag, pilfering items valued at more than $500,000. The pair then fled in the sedan, police said.

Officers arrested the pair Tuesday, around noon, after recognizing the men from the surveillance video, according to police.

Garrett was arrested on suspicion of burglary, grand theft, possession of stolen property, conspiracy, carrying a concealed weapon and carrying a loaded firearm. Pitts was arrested on suspicion of burglary, grand theft, possession of stolen property and conspiracy, police said.

During the arrest, officers were able to recover some of the stolen jewelry, according to police.
