Toxic blue-green algae has shut down swimming at Lake Temescal, the latest public swimming hole to be shuttered due to the public health hazard.
Lake Temescal in Oakland has been closed for swimming until further notice because of an outbreak of toxic algae in the water, according to the East Bay Regional Park District.
The park district announced the closure Monday evening at the lake located in the Oakland hills near the interchange between state Highways 24 and 13.
The park surrounding the lake remains open for fishing, picnicking, hiking and other activities.
The park district’s other lakes for swimming — Quarry Lakes in Fremont, Lake Anza in Berkeley, Lake Del Valle in Livermore, Cull Canyon in Castro Valley, Contra Loma in Antioch and Don Castro in Hayward — remain open.
Park district officials said exposure to toxic algae can cause rashes, skin or eye irritation, allergic reactions or gastrointestinal problems, and can also be fatal to dogs.
