A 26-year-old man died early this morning after he fell from a highway transition ramp in San Jose and was struck by a car, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Around 4:40 a.m., CHP officers received a report of a vehicle blocking a lane on the transition ramp from southbound Interstate Highway 680 to southbound U.S. Highway 101, according to CHP officials.
About a minute later, officers then received reports of an unidentified object in the roadway on Highway 101 at Interstate Highway 280, CHP officials said.
Upon arrival, officers found a 2009 Toyota Corolla with the driver’s side door open on the transition ramp and a male body lying in the roadway on Highway 101, just below the transition ramp, according to the CHP.
Officers identified the man as a San Jose resident.
Investigators believe the man fell to his death from the transition ramp, landing onto the southbound lanes of Highway 101, possibly during a suicide attempt, CHP officials said.
A 2003 BMW traveling in the southbound lanes of Highway 101 then struck the man’s body. The driver of the BMW was uninjured and contacted CHP to report the crash, according to CHP officials.
The CHP closed two lanes of southbound Highway 101 for about two hours as they investigated the incident.
