40 displaced in 5-alarm Mission Street fire

A five-alarm fire that burned six buildings in San Francisco’s Bernal Heights neighborhood was brought under control earlier Sunday morning and firefighters remain on scene.

Fire officials will remain in the area through Monday, as they investigate the cause for the blaze, which was began Saturday afternoon in the 3300 block of Mission Street.

This morning, the northbound sidewalk of 29th Street between San Jose Avenue and Mission Street remained open only for pedestrian traffic.

Additionally, the northbound lanes of Mission Street, between Virginia Avenue and Cesar Chavez Street, are only open for San Francisco Municipal Railway buses, according to fire officials.

Drivers should expect delays in the area.

The fire was first reported at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

As the fire spread to more buildings, firefighters ordered evacuations for residents in the 3300 block of Mission Street.

Firefighters were eventually able to contain the fire at 6:27 p.m., fire officials said.

A shelter-in-place order was lifted for a five-block area bounded by San Jose Avenue on the west, Cesar Chavez Street on the north, 30th Street and Eugenia Avenue on the south and Folsom and Elsie streets on the east.

At least two people were taken to a hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. Additionally, a 1-year-old was treated at the scene for breathing issues, according to fire officials.

Firefighters have not determined whether any pets died in the fire.

At least 40 people have been displaced as a result of the fire, fire officials said.

Officials with the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army have set up a shelter for residents at the Salvation Army Community Center at 1156 Valencia St., according to a Red Cross spokeswoman In addition, Mayor Ed Lee came to the scene and spoke with affected residents.
