A four-alarm fire this afternoon in San Francisco’s Bernal Heights neighborhood has been upgraded to five alarms and a shelter-in-place and evacuations have been ordered, according to fire officials.
The fire was first reported at about 2:30 p.m. near Mission and 29th streets.
The number of buildings on fire has increased from four to eight and fire officials have given an evacuation order for anyone inside buildings located between 3300 and 3366 Mission St., fire officials said.
The officials initially reported the order was for anyone in the buildings between 3312 and 3366 Mission St.
A shelter-in-place order is in effect for a five-block radius bounded by San Jose Avenue on the west, Cesar Chavez Street on the north, 30th Street and Eugenia Avenue on the south and Folsom and Elsie streets on the east.
Fire spokesman Jonathan Baxter said anyone affected by smoke should seek medical attention or call 911.
But, “if you’re able to leave the area, please do so,” Baxter asked.
No one has been injured.
City officials have activated the Department of Emergency Management and the Mayor’s Office is working with the American Red Cross to help anyone who has been displaced, Baxter said.
He said firefighters do not yet know how many people have been displaced.
