Kelby Tomlinson’s left thumb lands him on DL

Injuries continues to build up for Giants this month after infielder Kelby Tomlinson was placed on the 15-day DL Friday afternoon with a sprain to his left thumb.

He injured it diving on a play during Wednesday’s game against the Red Sox.

This story will be updated with quotes and post-game material from the Giants clubhouse at AT&T Park.

The injury came as a bit of a shock to Bruce Bochy, who said Tomlinson called Dave Groeschner this morning complaining of thumb pain:

“He did treatment and worked out after the game, woke up and it was killing him. Turned out he had a minor sprain… Kelby was as surprised and shocked as we were.”

With just Conor Gillaspie left as infield depth, the Giants purchased Ramiro Peña’s contract from Triple-A Sacramento and put Sergio Romo (right flexor strain) on the 60-day DL to make room.

Peña was batting .304 with the River Cats and played mostly at second, but got a little more time at shortstop after former River Cat Hak-Ju Lee opted out of his contract. Bochy said he’s pleasantly surprised after Peña’s so-so outing in Arizona:

“Didn’t have the best Spring but he really picked up his game in Sacramento.”

The 30-year-old has been in out of the Majors; he made his debut with the Yankees in 2009 and hasn’t had a big league at bat since his 2014 season with the Braves.

There’s good news injury land, though: Angel Pagan should start his rehab assignment in Sacramento on Saturday and, if all goes well, could be back in the lineup by Wednesday.

Matt Cain could take his rotation spot back as early as Monday depending on how he feels out of his bullpen session.

Hunter Pence‘s hamstring surgery was a success and it looks like his team will have their ‘fountain’ of positivity and joy back in the clubhouse as early as this Saturday.
