A San Quentin State Prison Death Row inmate assaulted a corrections officer Thursday evening.
Jesse Manzo, 27, slipped out of a handcuff and used it to assault the officer around 5 p.m. as the officer escorted him from a shower to his East Block housing unit, San Quentin spokesman Sam Robinson said.
Manzo struck the officer several times causing facial cuts and a broken nose, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokeswoman Terry Thornton said.
The officer was taken to a local hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, Robinson said.
Manzo, a self-admitted gang member, was sentenced to death in Riverside County on Aug. 2, 2013. He was convicted of the first-degree, hate-crime murder of Raymond Franklin in 2008 and has been on death row since Aug. 12, 2013.
After the assault, Manzo was taken to San Quentin’s Adjustment Center for inmates who are considered a threat to their and other’s safety, Thornton said.
The East Block is one of five housing units for male inmates on Death Row. There were 747 inmates on Death Row in California as of May 12.
