Chris Coghlan played second and third base plus left and right field for Oakland before being dealt to the Chicago Cubs for minor leaguer Arismendy Alcantara Thursday.
The Oakland Athletics made a trade Wednesday, sending Chris Coghlan to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for utility player Arismendy Alcantara.
Alcantara will remain in Triple-A where he is batting .264 with five home runs and 21 RBIs in 53 games while leading the Pacific Coast League with 21 steals — he has yet to be thrown out on an attempt.
Coghlan was batting .146, and despite having hit five home runs in 51 games he had been without power since May 15. He had also collected just four hits since a mid-May win in Tampa (17 games), and had just one hit in 18 at-bats in June.
In the games in which Coghlan played, the A’s (25-34) were 19-32 — 17-29 in games started.
A 24-year-old Dominican Republic native, Alcantara played parts of the 2014 and 2015 seasons in the big leagues, batting .194 with 10 home runs and 30 RBIs over 81 total games played. The switch-hitter is also 9-for-14 on stolen base attempts in the majors.
Although he has played at second base in all of his 51 minor-league games this season, Alcantara has also logged innings at third base (one game) and center field (48) in the major leagues.
Coghlan was acquired in February, when the A’s traded pitching prospect Aaron Brooks to the very same Cubs (41-17).
Brooks is currently on the disabled list and has not yet pitched in 2016.
