The eastbound off-ramp to Treasure Island on the Bay Bridge has reopened after a police pursuit of a stolen San Francisco Fire Department ambulance that ended in a fiery crash Tuesday morning.
The suspect, who was uninjured as a result of the crash, had led officers on a brief pursuit starting near San Francisco’s Union Square and finishing on Treasure Island.
The ambulance was taken as medical personnel were responding to a medical emergency at the Ambassador Hotel at 55 Mason St. around 8 a.m., according to fire officials and police.
The suspect then drove onto the Bay Bridge, heading east, before exiting at Treasure Island, police spokeswoman Officer Grace Gatpandan said.
Officers pursued the suspect, following them onto Treasure Island, Gatpandan said.
The suspect then lost control of the vehicle and crashed on the side of the road, causing the vehicle to catch fire.
Officers were able to detain the suspect, according to Gatpandan.
California Highway Patrol and Caltrans officials assisted police with the investigation and shutdown the eastbound lanes of the Treasure Island off-ramp for nearly two hours.
The closure caused a traffic delay on the Bay Bridge, as well as on nearby highways.
