SF police identify sergeant in latest fatal shooting

San Francisco police have identified the officer who fatally shot Jessica Williams last week in the Bayview District as Sgt. Justin Erb.

Williams was fatally shot around 9:45 a.m. last Thursday, May 19, after police attempted to pull her over on suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle on Elmira Street.

Police said she crashed while trying to flee, then attempted to drive the vehicle forward and backward while officers tried to detain her.

Erb fired a single shot, fatally striking Williams, who was transported to San Francisco General Hospital and pronounced deceased.

Later that day, as activists and reporters massed at City Hall, Mayor Ed Lee announced that Police Chief Greg Suhr would resign. Deputy Chief Toney Chaplin has been appointed acting chief until a permanent replacement is selected.
