Suspects in custody after Novato student slain

Two suspects were detained in high-risk tactical raids in Novato Thursday, Marin County sheriff’s officials said.

Sheriff’s officials wrote on Twitter at 2:12 p.m. about a raid in the area of Rowland and South Novato boulevards. They said at 3:09 p.m. that one suspect had been detained and no one was injured.

Then 4:23 p.m. deputies announced that a second suspect had been detained in a tactical operation on Leafwood Drive.

Sheriff’s officials did not immediately release the names of the suspects, but said earlier this afternoon that investigators were “playing full-court press” in seeking three suspects after two Novato High School students were shot, one fatally, on Wednesday.

One suspect remains at large, and deputies said Thursday afternoon that investigators are regrouping with a focus on apprehending that individual.

The students were shot at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the end of Fairway Drive. Deputies responded and found one victim who had been shot and stabbed, as well as a second who was fatally shot. The student who survived was in stable condition as of this morning, sheriff’s Lt. Doug Pittman said.

Novato police had advised people to stay clear of the area and shelter in place during the raid this afternoon.

Wednesday’s fatal shooting prompted Novato Unified School District officials to cancel classes today at Novato High School, located at 625 Arthur St.
