The death of a man found floating in a lake in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park Tuesday morning is being treated as suspicious, a police spokesman said.
A gardener in the area of Alvord Lake, located in the southeast corner of the park near Haight and Stanyan streets, reported seeing the body facedown in the lake at about 7 a.m., police spokesman Officer Carlos Manfredi said.
Police responded and investigators with the medical examiner’s office and the Police Department’s homicide detail determined that the death appears to be suspicious, Manfredi said.
He said there may have been a sign of a struggle related to the death, but investigators haven’t confirmed that yet. The man’s name is not yet being released by the medical examiner’s office.
The small lake will be drained so investigators can look for any other possible evidence in the case, Manfredi said. Police are also canvassing the area looking for witnesses or surveillance footage that may help in the investigation.
Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to call the Police Department’s anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444 or to send a tip by text message to TIP411 with “SFPD” in the message.
