Greg Suhr resigns after latest police shooting

San Francisco police Chief Greg Suhr has resigned following Thursday’s fatal officer-involved shooting in the Bayview District, Mayor Ed Lee said.

Lee said in a news conference at City Hall late this afternoon that he asked for Suhr’s resignation. The mayor said he has appointed Toney Chaplin as interim chief.

A 27-year-old woman in a stolen vehicle was fatally shot by a police sergeant Thursday morning, the third fatal officer-involved shooting in San Francisco since December.

The shootings prompted many protests and calls for the chief to be removed from his position.
